Hello once again,  this merry month of February 2017 I’m a little late on here.  I’ve been taking part in a production at Bordon Phoenix Theatre involving the back end of a cow…..  Anyway, down to business.

Firstly many congratulations to 1st Liss Scouts for opening our camping Season this year. I gather Gilwell was it’s usual muddy self this January.  It looks like it….

 February 2017 is #YouShape time.

What’s that I hear you cry?  #YouShape is where we find out what our Scouts want to do.  From the silly ideas to the gold nuggets you can work on and grow.  It’s the stuff that tempts us away from set programmes that are run every four years and brings us up to date with fresh ideas and enthusiasm.  It’s where we hand over the reins to our talented and capable young people.  What if they’re not able to do it I hear you say?  Think about that question….  who is it that guides them through their Scouting adventure?  If you don’t think they can do it then what do YOU need to change to make that happen.

It’s not just for February 2017 though- use it all year round, every year!

Programme Programme Programme

I can’t say it enough.  The secret of a good Troop is what it does.  It affects what the Scouts do.  They should have a huge input into it.  It will need modifying, changing, tweaking, call it what you like, but it’s down to them.  With Scouts joining come parents and the elusive extra leaders.  Parents want to be involved in something exciting.  Find out what your Scouts think and it gives you a good indication of what the parents (and prospective leaders) think.  People don’t walk in off the street to become Leaders, they come from nurturing parents.  Thats a fact.  Give them a reason, a role if you like, to come and help.  We all know Scouts is only an hour  a week, so ask a parent to sort out badges for an hour…..  Lots of nice badges there ‘Insert parent name here’…..  do you think you could help with one?  Then support them with whats needed.  Sneaky I know.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
